In 2021 France reached a total of 18,676 megawatts (MW) installed wind power capacity placing France at that time as the world's seventh largest wind power nation by installed capacity, behind the United Kingdom and Brazil and ahead of Canada and Italy. According to the IEA the yearly wind production was 20.2 TWh in 2015, representing almost 23% of the 88.4 TWh from renewable sources in France during that year. Furthermore wind provided for 4.3% of the country’s electricity demand out of the 18.7% provided by renewables in 2015.

En 2018, la France était au 4e rang européen pour la production d'électricité éolienne, loin derrière l'Allemagne, le Royaume-Uni et l'Espagne, et au 8e rang mondial en 2019. En 2018, la France comptait près de 8 000 éoliennes terrestres sur 1 380 parcs. Les appels d'offres organisés à partir de 2012 pour les parcs éoliens en mer ont sélectionné près de 10 GW de projets, dont le premier est en service en 2022 au large de Saint-Nazaire. La programmation pluriannuelle de l'énergie (PPE) fixe un objectif de 34 GW en 2028, soit un doublement par rapport à la puissance installée fin 2019 : 16,5 GW. Ce secteur totalisait 15 990 emplois directs en 2016, pour un chiffre d'affaires de 4,5 milliards d'euros, dont 60 % dans l'exploitation et la maintenance ; cependant 95 % des éoliennes installées en France jusqu'à mai 2014 provenaient de fabricants étrangers, et il n'existait plus de fabricant français d'éoliennes ; ceci commence à évoluer grâce aux parcs éoliens en mer, dont les composants sont en partie construits en France.
