وائل حلاق (ولد 1955 م) هو باحث فلسطيني الأصل، كندي الجنسية، مسيحيّ الديانة، متخصص بالقانون وتاريخ الفكر الإسلامي، يعمل كأستاذ علوم اجتماعية في جامعة كولومبيا - قسم دراسات الشرق الأوسط. التحق حلاق بعد حصوله على شهادة الدكتوراة من جامعة واشنطن بمعهد الدراسات الإسلامية بجامعة مكغيل وعمل كأستاذ مساعد بالقانون الإسلامي عام 1985 م. نال درجة الأستاذية عام 1994م. يعتبر حلاق مؤلف ومحاضر واسع الإطلاع إذ لديه الكثير من الاسهامات بمجال الدراسات الإسلامية. ترجمت أعماله إلى عدة لغات منها العبرية والإندونيسية والإيطالية واليابانية والتركية.عدّه المركز الملكي للبحوث والدراسات الإسلامية (الأردن) في كتاب صدر عام 2009 واحدا من «أكثر 500 شخصية مسلمة تأثيراً في العالم».

Zurzeit ist er Avalon Foundation Professor in the Humanities am Department of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies der Columbia University in New York. Er ist ein bekannter Autor mit vielen Beiträgen auf dem Gebiet der Islamwissenschaft. Er erlangte Berühmtheit mit seiner Arbeit Was the Gate of Ijtihad Closed? gegen die Vorstellung von geschlossenen Toren des Idschtihād. Seine Werke wurden in mehrere Sprachen übersetzt, darunter Hebräisch, Indonesisch, Italienisch, Japanisch und Türkisch. He has published over eighty books and articles on topics including law, legal theory, philosophy, political theory, and logic. In 2009, John Esposito and his review panel included Hallaq in a list of the 500 most influential Muslims in the world for his research and publications on Islamic law, although Hallaq is Christian. Hallaq gained prominence for his doctoral work challenging the notion of the so-called "the closing of the gate of ijtihad," a narrative that was for long accepted in the field as paradigmatic. The narrative posited that Muslim jurists of the post formative period abandoned creative legal reasoning, this leading to a generalized stagnation of the law. Hallaq further argued that this narrative was a product of colonial discourse that attempted to justify the colonization of Muslim lands and the destruction of indigenous Muslim legal institutions.
