Rick becomes the group's leader. The survivors leave Atlanta and travel across hostile territory in search of a safer refuge, during which Lori is revealed to be pregnant. After a few failed attempts, the group finds new friends, and eventually, an abandoned prison.

In Deutschland wird die Comicserie seit dem 13. Januar 2006 vom Cross-Cult-Verlag in Sammelheften veröffentlicht. Eine auf dem Comic basierende Fernsehserie startete am 31. Oktober 2010 in den Vereinigten Staaten bei AMC. Der Comic gewann 2010 den Eisner Award für Best Continuing Series bei der San Diego Comic-Con International. Die Serie handelt von einer Gruppe von Menschen, die nach einer weltweiten Zombie-Apokalypse in den zerstörten USA um ihr Überleben kämpfen. Die Hauptfigur Rick Grimes, ein Kleinstadtpolizist aus Cynthiana, Kentucky, seine Familie und andere Überlebende haben sich zusammengeschlossen, nachdem Zombies die Erde überrannt haben. Während die Serie fortschreitet, entwickeln sich die Charaktere weiter und ihre Persönlichkeiten verändern sich unter dem Stress der Zombie-Apokalypse. Im Juli 2019 gab der Verlag für viele Leser überraschend bekannt, dass die Comic-Serie nach 15 Jahren und 193 Ausgaben nicht mehr fortgesetzt werde. Kirkman selbst äußerte sich dazu und erklärte, dass er die Serie so unvorhersehbar habe enden lassen wollen, wie die überraschenden Tode in den Comics geschehen seien.

Realizada en blanco, negro y grises, excepto las portadas, fue publicada originalmente en Estados Unidos por Image Comics desde el año 2003, en Chile por Editorial Unlimited desde 2013, en México por Editorial Kamite desde diciembre de 2012, y en Bolivia por TuKiosko Editorial desde octubre de 2013. En 2010 fue objeto de una adaptación como serie televisiva por parte de la cadena AMC. El cómic se centra en Rick Grimes, un sheriff adjunto de Georgia que resulta herido durante un tiroteo y termina en estado de coma. Cuando despierta, se da cuenta de que está en un mundo arrasado por caníbales semimuertos que lo único que buscan es devorar a todo ser vivo que se cruce en su camino. Poco a poco asume el papel de líder del grupo, pasando más tarde a liderar a toda una comunidad.El cómic terminó en el número 193 el 3 de julio de 2019. Aunque en realidad la causa de la aparición de los zombis no se revela por completo, la trama permite palpar el desarrollo humano y personal de los personajes y las vías para enfrentarse al panorama de persecución, destrucción y muerte provocado por los zombis, conocidos en su mayoría como caminantes, errantes, podridos, exterminadores o mordedores (en Woodbury) pero nunca se utiliza la palabra zombi para describirlos. Según Robert Kirkman (creador del cómic y productor ejecutivo de la serie) esto se debe a que dentro del mundo de The Walking Dead no existe lo referente a la palabra zombi, no hay películas, cómics, videojuegos o libros ni nada por el estilo que mencionen dicha palabra. La idea es tan simple como lo siguiente: dentro del universo ficticio de The Walking Dead los personajes no conocen la palabra y los llaman de forma distinta.

Elke uitgave telt ongeveer 32 pagina’s en wordt vanaf nummer 7 door Charlie Adlard getekend, voorheen was dit Tony Moore. De strips worden per zes gebundeld en uitgegeven in de vorm van een trade paperback, elk met een titel van drie woorden. Op de voorkant na is de strip in zijn geheel zwart-wit. Het verhaal speelt zich af rond politieagent Rick Grimes, die na een coma ontwaakt in een post-apocalyptische wereld waarin de doden door een onbekende aanleiding weer tot leven zijn gekomen als zombies. De strip heeft in 2010 een Eisner Award in de categorie Beste doorlopende serie gewonnen. Op 3 juli 2019 kwam onverwacht de laatste uitgave uit.

Em 2010, a série em quadrinhos foi adaptada como série de televisão pelo canal AMC, e no mesmo ano ganhou o prêmio Eisner Award de Melhor série contínua, anunciado na San Diego Comic-Con. A série é focada em um grupo de sobreviventes que lutam para superar o caos de um apocalipse de zumbis. Embora na realidade a causa do aparecimento dos zumbis não seja totalmente revelada, o enredo permite sentir o desenvolvimento humano e pessoal dos personagens e as formas de enfrentar o panorama de perseguição, destruição e morte causado pelos zumbis, conhecido pelos personagens como caminhantes, errantes, bichos ou mordedores, mas a palavra zumbi nunca é usada para descrevê-los. A série em quadrinhos foi lançada no Brasil em 2006 pela HQM Editora em edições encadernadas com o título Os Mortos-Vivos. Ela segue os mesmos moldes das encadernações americanas, porém ao final de cada volume eles colocam as capas originas da série e um posfácio escrito por um convidado. Em 2012, após o crescente sucesso da série de televisão, a editora lançou uma revista mensal com o título original The Walking Dead. A editora publicou 18 volumes encadernados entre 2006 e 2015 e 48 edições mensais da revista entre 2012 e 2017.
