The Danny Thomas Show (titled Make Room for Daddy for its first three seasons) is an American sitcom that ran from 1953 to 1957 on ABC and from 1957 to 1964 on CBS. Starring Danny Thomas as a successful night club entertainer, the show focused on his relationship with his family, yet went through a number of significant changes in cast and characters during the course of its run. Episodes regularly featured music by Thomas, guest stars and occasionally other cast members as part of the plot. In March 1953, Thomas first signed the contract for the show with ABC and chose Desilu Studios to film it using its three-camera method. Two proposed titles during pre-production were The Children's Hour and Here Comes Daddy.

Un revival della serie andò in onda con il titolo dal 1970 al 1971. La serie ripete lo stesso schema di successo delle prime sitcom televisive statunitensi: un attore ben conosciuto al pubblico (qui Danny Thomas) che appare con la sua famiglia "televisiva", moglie e bambini, nelle mille piccole vicende di vita quotidiana. Gli attori bambini avevano già dimostrato di poter essere una componente importante per il successo delle sitcom. Rusty Hamer non fu il primo attore bambino a crescere in una serie televisiva (e neppure l'unico ad esser impiegato in questa serie, dove lavorarono per anni anche Sherry Jackson e Angela Cartwright). Ma Hamer fu il primo attore bambino a vivere la sua intera infanzia per ben 11 anni, dai 6 ai 17 anni, interpretando con grande successo sempre lo stesso personaggio televisivo, che anche nella finzione avrà il suo stesso nome "Rusty" e con il quale finirà per essere da tutti identificato. La fine del programma fu per lui un trauma dal quale non riuscirà mai a liberarsi e che fu acuito dal mancato successo della ripresa dello show nel 1970-71. La depressione lo porterà all'alcolismo e quindi alla morte per suicidio a soli 42 anni.
