Následnictví bhútánského trůnu se řídí principem kognatické primogenitury (muži mají přednost před ženami jen na stejné úrovni tj. bratr před sestrou) tj. trůn dění nejstarší syn krále, popř. vnuk, poté mladší synové či vnuci a poté starší dcera, její potomci a poté mladší dcery a jejich potomci, přednost má starší linie před mladší. Náslenictví trůnu vychází od prvního krále z rodu Wangčhugů.

Actualmente, la línea de sucesión es de acuerdo con la primogenitura cognática de preferencia masculina con los hombres que preceden a las mujeres que están en el mismo grado de parentesco. Si el heredero aparente ha alcanzado la mayoría de edad de 21 años, el monarca renunciará a la edad de 65 años. Si el heredero aparente y las personas más cercanas en la línea de sucesión se consideran inadecuadas, le corresponde al monarca decidir quién será el próximo heredero. Si el monarca viola la constitución, debe abdicar.

The line of succession to the throne of Bhutan is based on the constitution of Bhutan. Currently the line of succession is according to male-preference cognatic primogeniture with males preceding females who are in the same degree of kinship. If the heir apparent has reached the age of majority of 21, the monarch would step down at age 65. If the heir apparent and the nearest people in the line of succession are deemed unsuitable, it is up to the monarch to decide who will be the next heir. If the monarch violates the constitution, they must abdicate.
