Southeast Asian studies (SEAS) refers to research and education on the language, culture, and history of the different states and ethnic groups of Southeast Asia. Some institutions refer to this discipline as ASEAN Studies since most of the countries that they study belong to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN. Die Südostasienwissenschaften beschäftigen sich mit den Sprachen, Kulturen, Literaturen sowie der Geschichte Südostasiens. Sie gehören zu den Regionalwissenschaften (Area studies) und sind wie alle diese in ihrer Ausgestaltung geprägt von ihrer Entstehung und dem Kulturraum in dem sie entstanden sind. Obwohl einige der heutigen Staaten in Südostasien auch europäische Sprachen als Amts- oder Verkehrssprachen verwenden (z. B. Portugiesisch in Osttimor) sind nur einheimische Sprachen Gegenstand der Forschung. Die Südostasienwissenschaften werden in der deutschen Hochschulpolitik als kleines Fach eingestuft. Teilgebiete sind u. a. Austronesistik, Malaiologie/Indonesistik, Thaiistik, Vietnamistik.
