A les eleccions al Parlament del Regne Unit de 1983 i 1987 es presentaren en coalició amb el Partit Liberal en l'Aliança SD-Liberals, amb el que es fusionaren el 1988 per a formar els Liberal Demòcrates. Una minoria, però, reconstituí el partit el 1989. L'origen del partit es troba en les diferències ideològiques internes dins el Partit Laborista durant els anys 1950, pèro posades al descobert per Roy Jenkins el 1979 en la lectura de Dimbleby, quan fou nomenat comissari de la Comissió Europea, on reclama una realiniació de la política britànica, i es planteja ingressar en el Partit Liberal o bé fundar un nou partit d'acord amb els principis de la socialdemocràcia europea. Alhora, alguns militants històrics, com Dick Taverne i altres, havien abandonat el partit i es presentaren a les eleccions de 1974 i 1979 com a independents laboristes, però no assoliren escó; i el partit fou esquitxat a nivell local per alguns afers de corrupció i disputes internes. Molts dels fundadors del partit formaren part del Manifesto Group, que s'oposaven a l'orientació excessivament esquerrana del partit, de la presència de i de l'excessiu paper dels sindicats. Les diferències esclataren durant l'elecció interna del candidat laborista per a substituir James Callaghan, i la majoria abandonaren el partit en ser escollit . Els quatre fundadors del partit, notoris moderats laboristes, anunciaren la creació en roda de premsa (declaració de Limehouse). Se li uniren 28 diputats laboristes i el conservador . The SDP officially advocated social democracy, but its actual propensity is evaluated as close to social liberalism. The SDP was founded on 26 March 1981 by four senior Labour Party moderates, dubbed the "Gang of Four": Roy Jenkins, David Owen, Bill Rodgers, and Shirley Williams, who issued the Limehouse Declaration. Owen and Rodgers were sitting Labour Members of Parliament (MPs); Jenkins had left Parliament in 1977 to serve as President of the European Commission, while Williams had lost her seat in the 1979 general election. All four had held cabinet experience in the 1970s before Labour lost power in 1979. The four left the Labour Party as a result of the January 1981 Wembley conference which committed the party to unilateral nuclear disarmament and withdrawal from the European Economic Community. They also believed that Labour had become too left-wing, and had been infiltrated at constituency party level by Militant tendency whose views and behaviour they considered to be at odds with the Parliamentary Labour Party and Labour voters. Shortly after its formation, the SDP formed a political and electoral alliance with the Liberal Party, the SDP–Liberal Alliance, which lasted through the 1983 and 1987 general elections. In 1988, the two parties merged, forming the Social and Liberal Democrats, later renamed the Liberal Democrats, although a minority, led by Owen, left to form a continuing SDP.

У 1984 році союз ЛП-СДП брав участь у , однак йому не вдалося отримати жодного місця, хоча він і набрав 19% голосів в Англії, Уельсі та Шотландії. На кандидати ЛП-СДП отримали 7,34 мільйона голосів (22,6%) і 22 депутатських мандата. 3 березня 1988 року обидві партії прийняли рішення про злиття, утворивши існуючу і донині Партію соціальних і ліберальних демократів, яка потім була перейменована у Партію ліберальних демократів. Частина соціал-демократів, незгодних з об'єднанням з лібералами, створили нову партію під назвою СДП .

社會民主黨（Social Democratic Party，SDP）是英國在1981年至1988年期間存在的一個中間主义的社會民主主義政黨，自工黨分裂產生。社會民主黨的成員大多數原工黨內的右派人士。工黨在1979年淪為在野黨之後，黨內左右對立激化，最早左派取得黨的領導權，導致對此不滿的右派人士離黨，另組社會民主黨，創黨當時有14個國會議席。社會民主黨成立之後和自由黨展開合作，在1983年英國大選中兩黨聯盟的得票率達25.4%，但只獲得23個議席。1988年，自由黨和社會民主黨合併，成為現在的自由民主黨。
