Iemand zal zichzelf weliswaar bijna nooit een productivist noemen, het zijn vaak de politieke protesten die naar hun mening iemand als een productivist bestempelen. Politieke tegenhangende ideologieën zijn bijvoorbeeld: ecologisme, anarchisme en het socialisme.
