Το πολίτευμα του Βανουάτου είναι κοινοβουλευτική δημοκρατία, με αρχηγό κυβέρνησης τον πρωθυπουργό, στα πλαίσια ενός πολυκομματικού συστήματος. Η εκτελεστική εξουσία ασκείται από την κυβέρνηση, ενώ η νομοθετική από την κυβέρνηση και το Κοινοβούλιο. Η Δικαιοσύνη είναι ανεξάρτητη από την κυβέρνηση και το Κοινοβούλιο. Η κυβέρνηση και η κοινωνία τείνουν να διαχωρίζονται σε γλωσσολογικές – γαλλικές και αγγλικές- γραμμές. Η σύσταση κυβερνήσεων συνασπισμού, ωστόσο, αποδεικνύεται δυσχερής τα τελευταία χρόνια, εξαιτίας των διαφορών ανάμεσα στους αγγλόφωνους και στους γαλλόφωνους.
