Oficiálním politickým jménem českého státu je Česká republika, které je uvedeno v Ústavě České republiky. Oficiálním zeměpisným (krátkým) jménem je Česko, které bylo standardizováno na národní a mezinárodní úrovni a je uvedeno v oficiálních databázích zeměpisných (krátkých) jmen zemí OSN. Snahy o zavedení krátkého (zeměpisného) jednoslovného názvu se objevily hned po osamostatnění státu na jaře 1993, kdy bylo krátké zeměpisné jméno Česko standardizováno Českým úřadem zeměměřickým a katastrálním, kterému to ze zákona přísluší. Část veřejnosti však k tomuto názvu zaujímá z různých důvodů nepříznivý postoj, převážně jej nepoužívá a místo něho volí politický název i v nepolitických souvislostech.
