Estas fuerzas están comandadas por un responsable único, un comandante, que en estos momentos es Nick Sawyer. Argentina retomó el control de las islas Malvinas el 2 de abril de 1982. Después de recuperar estos territorios en junio de 1982, el Reino Unido invirtió fuertemente en las islas con objeto de aumentar su defensa, siendo el punto más importante de la misma la nueva base aérea de Mount Pleasant (Monte Agradable), a 43 kilómetros de Puerto Argentino/Stanley'. La base se abrió en 1985, estando totalmente operativa en 1986.

After recapturing the territory in June 1982, the UK invested heavily in the defence of the islands, the centrepiece of which was a new airfield at RAF Mount Pleasant, 27 miles (43 km) west of Stanley. The base was opened in 1985, and became fully operational in 1986.
