Im Februar 2012 wurde die Printausgabe bei Oxford University Press veröffentlicht. Die Enzyklopädie wird von Fachkollegen begutachtet.

It represents a new edition of the Encyclopedia of Public International Law published between 1991 and 2001 by Rudolf Bernhardt. In February 2012, the print edition was published by Oxford University Press. The encyclopedia is peer reviewed.

Sean D. Murphy schrieb 2013 in einer Rezension der Arbeit: „Alles in allem steht es außer Frage, dass die Max-Planck-Enzyklopädie ihrem Anspruch als maßgebliches Nachschlagewerk des Völkerrechts gerecht wird.“
