In its first season, a total of 24 teams competed in the Liga 3, 2 of which were relegated from 2020–21 Liga Portugal 2 and 22 others which were promoted from 2020–21 Campeonato de Portugal. This number is set to be reduced to 20 teams for the 2023–24 season.

A Terceira Liga, também designada por Liga 3, é o recém-criado terceiro escalão do sistema de ligas de futebol de Portugal. Criada na época 2021–22 pela Federação Portuguesa de Futebol, é organizada pela própria entidade. É disputada por vinte e quatro clubes, num sistema de promoção e despromoção com a Segunda Liga e o Campeonato de Portugal. Adicionalmente, as equipas da Liga 3 participam na Taça de Portugal. O atual campeão nacional é o SCU Torreense, após conquistar na época 2021–22 o seu 1º título.
