Na první poslech je zde patrná inspirace anglickým folkem, obzvláště v předělávce staroanglické písně Gallows Pole. Přesto album obsahuje typické „vypalovačky“ a dnes již legendární skladby. Již úvodní Immigrant song uvozená šíleným vytím zpěváka a smrtící kytarovou linkou dává tušit, že pánové Page, Plant, Bonham a Jones mají stále co říct. Dalším velkým hitem je dlouhá Since I've Been Loving You, která je jakousi ódou na fyzickou lásku, protkána typickým vzdycháním a toužebnými vzlyky Roberta Planta. Důkazem, že kapela zvládá nejen hlasité a tvrdé písně, budiž krásná akustická balada That's the way, která od vydání tohoto alba nechyběla téměř na žádném koncertě „zeppelinů“. Nutno dodat, že i přes obrovský úspěch, které kapele přineslo následující album IV, které zastínilo vše co mu předcházelo, zapsalo se album III do historie rockové hudby zlatým písmem. První dvě alba Led Zeppelin stály na poctivém tvrdém blues a rockových riffech, třetí LP ukazuje směřování skupiny i do jiných hudebních oblastí. Aniž by zcela zanevřeli na onen syrový rock, „trojka“ je z velké části folková, založená na akustických rytmech, které jejich hudbě dodaly novou hloubku. Hard-rockové skladby tu jsou nejen v menšině, ani jejich zvuk už není tak přímočarý jako předtím. Platí to jak o odvázané "Immigrant Song", které dominuje Plantovo ječení, tak o "Celebration Day" nebo o "Out on the Tiles". Nalezneme zde také klasické blues v podobě písně "Since I've Been Loving You". Jádro celé desky však tvoří písně inspirované britským folkem ("Bron-Y-Aur Stomp", "That's the Way", "Tangerine"), "Gallows Pole" a "Hats Off To (Roy) Harper" jsou přímo navíc předělávky tradičních folkových písniček.

As with prior albums, Page served as producer on the album, with mixing done by Andy Johns and Terry Manning. The album showed a progression from straightforward rock towards folk and acoustic music. While hard rock influences were still present, such as on "Immigrant Song", acoustic-based songs such as "Gallows Pole" and "That's the Way" showed Led Zeppelin were capable of playing different styles successfully. The band wrote most of the material themselves, but as with prior records, included two songs that were re-interpretations of earlier works: "Gallows Pole", based on a traditional English folk song, by way of American singer Fred Gerlach; and "Hats Off to (Roy) Harper", a reworking of a blues song by Bukka White. The acoustic material developed from a songwriting session between Plant and Page at Bron-Yr-Aur cottage in Wales, which influenced the musical direction. The album was one of the most anticipated of 1970, and its shipping date was held up by the intricate inner sleeve design based around a volvelle, with numerous images visible through holes in the outer cover. It was an immediate commercial success upon release and topped the UK and US charts. Although many critics were initially confused over the change in musical style and gave the album a mixed response, Led Zeppelin III has since been acknowledged as representing an important milestone in the band's history and a turning point in their music.

De opnames vonden plaats van november 1969 tot augustus 1970 in verschillende studio’s en werd in Nederland uitgebracht op 5 oktober 1970 door Atlantic Records. Het album stond in 1970 totaal 8 weken genoteerd in de Nederlandse Album Top 100 met als hoogste notering de 3e positie.Het album was muzikaal gezien gevarieerder dan de twee voorgaande albums van de band door de aanwezigheid van door folkmuziek geïnspireerde nummers.Naast de gebruikelijke hardrock nummers, zoals "Immigrant Song", bewees de band ook in staat te zijn om akoestische nummers als "Gallows Pole" en "That's the Way" te spelen. De meeste nummers zijn door de band zelf geschreven maar, net als op de voorgaande albums, werden ook twee bestaande nummers herschreven: "Gallows Pole" is gebaseerd op een opname uit 1962, van de Amerikaanse folkmuzikant Fred Gerlach. "Hats Off to (Roy) Harper" is gebaseerd op het nummer "Shake 'Em On Down" uit 1937, van de Amerikaanse deltabluesgitarist en -zanger Bukka White.
