Die Stadt hatte bereits einen orthodoxen Patriarchen, der verjagt wurde und nach Konstantinopel floh. Das Byzantinische Reich arbeitete an seiner Wiedereinsetzung als einzigem Patriarchen, entweder für beide Glaubensrichtungen oder für die Orthodoxe Kirche alleine. Der Vertrag von Devol von 1108 setzte den griechischen Patriarchen nominell wieder ein, die Bestimmung wurde allerdings nie umgesetzt.

The jurisdiction of the Latin patriarchs in Antioch extended over the three feudal principalities of Antioch, Edessa, and Tripoli. Towards the end of the twelfth century the island of Cyprus was added. In practice they were far more dependent upon the popes than their predecessors, the Greek patriarchs. After the fall of Antioch (1268) the popes still appointed patriarchs, who, however, were unable to take possession of the see. Il Patriarca fu una delle maggiori autorità ecclesiastiche negli Stati crociati, al servizio dei cattolici della diocesi e rappresentante di tutti i cristiani che vivevano nel territorio della diocesi. Nel periodo delle crociate furono presenti due gerarchie, una greca ed una latina, ognuna con le proprie regole e liturgie, vescovi, abati, cattedrali e monasteri.

Die ganze Zeit über jedoch wurde von Konstantinopel ein griechischer Patriarch zumindest ernannt. Nach dem Ende der Kreuzfahrerstaaten sank das Lateinische Patriarchat Antiochia faktisch zum Titularpatriarchat ab. Die Titelträger waren meist Kurienkardinäle und residierten in Rom. Der Titel blieb bis zu seiner Abschaffung 1964 erhalten.

In Constantinopel zelf was er de hele tijd wel een oosters-orthodoxe patriarch aanwezig. Het titulaire ambt Latijnse patriarch van Antiochië bleef nog eeuwenlang gehandhaafd, met als zetel de Basiliek van Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, tot het uiteindelijk in 1964 werd afgeschaft.
