Tá breis is trí chéad míle duine ina gcónaí sa chathair féin, ach má chuirtear an cruinneagán iomlán daonra i dtimpeallacht na cathrach san áireamh, is féidir a rá go bhfuil trí mhilliún go leith i dtuilleamaí Katowice ar bhealach éigin. Is iad na cathracha a bhaineann leis an gcruinneagán seo ná , Gliwice, , , , , , , , , , , , , Świętochłowice, agus . Tá Katowice suite sa tSiléis, an cúige traidisiúnta ar imeall thiar na Polainne, nó ar imeall thoir na Gearmáine, agus is é an t-ainm Gearmáinise atá ar an áit ná Kattowitz. Siúd is gur Polannaigh (nó Slavaigh) ba mhó a bhí ina gcónaí sna bólaí seo, ba iad stáit láidre na Gearmáine - an Ostair ar dtús, agus an Phrúis ón mbliain 1742 ar aghaidh - a bhí ag rialú na Siléise i bhfad roimh chríochdheighiltí na Polainne féin. Idir eatarthu a bhí an tSiléis riamh. Tá an ceantar go léir ag teacht i dtír ar an mianadóireacht agus ar an teilgcheártaíocht. Ba í an mhianadóireacht a rinne cathair de Katowice, nó ní raibh ann ach sráidbhaile i dtús na naoú haoise déag. hOsclaíodh an chéad dá pholl mianach, Waterloo agus Ferdynand, sa bhliain 1824. Ansin, thosaigh an áit ag tiomsú daonra go sciobtha, agus sa bhliain 1865, bronnadh dintiúirí cathrach ar an áit go hoifigiúil. Tháinig an áit slán as an Chéad Chogadh Domhanda, le fírinne ní dhearna an cogadh ach maitheas mór don tionsclaíocht áitiúil. Sna blianta go díreach i ndiaidh an chogaidh, d'éirigh daonra an cheantair amach in aghaidh na nGearmánach i dtrí cheannairc na Siléise, agus sa bhliain 1922, cuireadh Katowice leis an bPolainn. Idir an dá chogadh, tháinig an-bhorradh ar an mbaincéireacht i gKatowice. Nuair a thosaigh an Dara Cogadh Domhanda, thréig arm na Polainne an áit sular tháinig na Gearmánaigh, agus níor fágadh ach scabhtaí na háite ag iarraidh Katowice a chosaint. Nuair a shealbhaigh na Gearmánaigh an áit, i Mí Mheán Fómhair den bhliain 1939, cuireadh an tsionagóg áitiúil trí thine, agus na Gearmánaigh ag scaoileadh urchair leis na daoine a bhí ag éalú ón dóiteán. Go gairid ina dhiaidh sin, maraíodh tríocha Polannach agus Giúdach ón áit ar an tsiocair gurbh iadsan a d'adhain an dóiteán. Básaíodh na céadta Polannach i rith an chúpla seachtain ina dhiaidh sin. Bhí ocht míle Giúdach ina gcónaí san áit roimh an gcogadh, ach ó bhí an chathair le dul don Ghearmáin, is follasach nach raibh cead acu fanacht. Tugadh go dtí an Ghobharnóireacht Ghinearálta iad, is é sin, an chuid den Pholainn a bhí á rialú mar ghobharnóireacht mhíleata. Ba ansin, taobh amuigh den Ghearmáin féin, a cuireadh sna seomraí gáis iad.
