يعتبر الإسلام في سوريا أكبر أديان البلاد وأوسعها انتشارًا، ويتألف من الأغلبية السنية (بين 70 - 80%) وأقليات من الطوائف الأخرى كالشيعة، والدروز بالإضافة إلى العلويين والإسماعيلية. وإلى جانب الإسلام تنشتر في سوريا المسيحية وتبلغ نسبة معتنقيها باختلاف الإحصاءات بين (5 - 12%) وكانت البلاد تضم عشرات الآلاف من اليهود، إلا أنّ أعدادهم قد تناقصت بشكل كبير، خلال النصف الثاني للقرن العشرين. المذهب الأوسع انتشارًا في البلاد هو المذهب الحنفي، مع تواجد بضع جيوب للمذاهب الأخرى، كما تنتشر في سوريا الصوفية، خصوصًا الطريقة النقشبندية.
