Hamilton West and Earnock is one of the twenty wards used to elect members of the South Lanarkshire Council. Created in 2007, it elects four councillors. Its territory covers the suburban south-west of Hamilton including the Brackenhill, Earnock, High Earnock, Highstonehall, Hillhouse, and neighbourhoods, as well as the adjoining modern West Craigs development (which belongs to Blantyre in some reckonings) – these boundaries were unaffected by a 2017 national review. In 2019, the ward's population was 18,618.
