On May 25, 1969, several young officers calling themselves the Free Officers Movement (after the Egyptian officers who instigated the Egyptian revolution of 1952) seized power in Sudan and started the Nimeiri era in the history of Sudan. At the conspiracy's core were nine officers led by Colonel Jaafar an Nimeiri, who had been implicated in plots against the Abboud regime. Nimeiri's coup preempted plots by other groups, most of which involved army factions supported by the Sudanese Communist Party (SCP), Arab nationalists, or conservative religious groups. He justified the coup on the grounds that civilian politicians had paralyzed the decision-making process, had failed to deal with the country's economic and regional problems, and had left Sudan without a permanent constitution.

Este periodo histórico es separado del Sudán postcolonial al ser iniciado con un golpe de Estado que acabaría con la frágil democracia del recién nacido país, pero no sin resolver conflictos latentes que culminarán en la Segunda Guerra Civil Sudanesa. El 25 de mayo de 1969 varios jóvenes oficiales, que se hacían llamar el Movimiento de Oficiales Libres, tomó el poder en Sudán, con lo que trajeron la denominada época Nimeiri en la Historia de Sudán. En el núcleo de la conspiración había nueve oficiales liderados por el coronel Yaafar al-Numeiry, que había estado implicado en conspiraciones contra el régimen de Ibrahim Abboud.
