There [in Dublin North West] you saw the reality of life, the reality of Dublin, the reality of Irish life. There was terrific poverty in Ireland. Small [homes], three bedrooms, with 19 people living in them."

The formulator of the Towards a Just Society policy document, Costello was credited with shifting Fine Gael towards the left, a move which made the party a more attractive coalition partner for the Labour Party. Costello's ideals were later viewed as having been taken up by Garret FitzGerald, who became leader of Fine Gael and was twice Taoiseach. As Attorney General, Costello created the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Law Reform Commission, and for this Costello has been called the "most consequential attorney general in the state's history".

Rugadh i mBaile Átha Cliath é, mac Sheán Mac Coisdealbha a bhí ina Thaoiseach dhá uaire. Toghadh é den chéad uair in olltoghchán na bliana 1951 i ndáilcheantar Bhaile Átha Cliath Thiar-Thuaidh agus atoghadh é ag gach olltoghchán ina dhiaidh sin go dtí gur éirigh sé as sa bhliain 1969. Sheas sé arís i ndáilcheantar Bhaile Átha Cliath Thiar-Theas ag olltoghchán 1973 agus toghadh arís é. Ní raibh Fine Gael i gcumhacht i rith na 1960í agus ba cheannaire é Mac Coisdealbha de ghlúin nua polaiteoirí a bhí ag iarraidh Fine Gael a bhogadh ar chlé. Ba phríomh-údar é den cháipéis I dTreo Sochaí Cheart (Béarla: Towards a Just Society) a bhí mar chlár Fhine Gael in olltoghchán 1965. Bhí tionchar mór ar an gcáipéis ar an bpáirtí sna blianta ina dhiaidh sin. Ceapadh mar Ard-Aighne é sa chomhrialtas idir Fine Gael agus Páirtí an Lucht Oibre a bhuaigh olltoghchán 1973. D'éirigh sé as an bpolaitíocht nuair a ceapadh é mar bhreitheamh san Ard-Chúirt sa bhliain 1977. Bhí sé i gceannas ar an mbinse fiosrúcháin a scrúdaigh an tubaiste a tharla in Oileán Faoide sa bhliain 1979 nuair a phléasc long ola. Ceapadh é mar Uachtarán na hÁrd-Chúirte sa bhliain 1994 agus d'éirigh sé as sa bhliain 1997.
