Scritta a Saint-Germain-en-Laye, l'Ordonnance venne registrata dal Parlamento di Parigi il 26 agosto 1670 ed entrò in vigore il 1º gennaio 1671. Fu uno dei primi testi giuridici che tentarono di codificare il diritto penale in Francia e rimase valido fino alla rivoluzione francese. Venne abrogato con un decreto adottato dall'Assemblea nazionale costituente il 9 ottobre 1789.

The Criminal Ordinance of 1670 (French: Ordonnance criminelle de 1670, a.k.a. The act broadened the jurisdiction of the nationwide policing force Maréchaussée to include burglary and popular disorder and confirmed their power to arrest any offender. It also sought to combat abuse of their authority by putting enforcement under the supervision of local royal courts.
