En remo, el timonel (o patrón) es el miembro de la tripulación que se encarga principalmente de seguir el rumbo durante la competición y efectuar los posibles giros o curvas que sean necesarios. Normalmente va sentado o de pie en la popa del barco mirando hacia la proa, en sentido contrario a los remeros, que van de espaldas al movimiento. In a rowing crew, the coxswain (/ˈkɒksən/ KOK-sən; colloquially known as the cox or coxie) is the member who does not row but steers the boat and faces forward, towards the bow. The coxswain is responsible for steering the boat and coordinating the power and rhythm of the rowers. In some capacities, the coxswain is responsible for implementing the training regimen or race plan. Most coaches cannot communicate to boat/coxswain, so the coxswain is the "coach" in the boat. A coxswain is necessary in the first place because the rowers sit with their backs to the direction of travel.

Seine Beteiligung an der Fortbewegung des Bootes erfolgt über das Geben von Kommandos. Oft führt er das Boot unter Zuhilfenahme einer Steuereinrichtung. Er trägt für die Sicherheit der Mannschaft Sorge. Im Kanurennsport und im Rennrudersport gibt der Steuermann bei Beobachtung des Rennverlaufs auch taktische Kommandos – wie Zwischenspurts oder eine Steigerung/Senkung der Schlagfrequenz – an die Sportler. Er feuert über das gesamte Rennen die Mannschaft an und gibt Informationen zur noch zu bewältigenden Strecke und zur Position der Mannschaft im Rennen. Beim Drachenboot ist die Renntaktik Aufgabe des Trommlers, der auch die Ansagen über eine Sprechanlage macht.
