Gregor von Tours berichtet, dass Chilperich (nachdem er mit dem Schwert getötet worden war) zusammen mit seiner Frau auf Bestreben seines Bruders Gundobad, sich sein Reich einzuverleiben, in einem Brunnen geworfen wurde. Po smrti krále Gondiocha a strýce Chilpericha I. se spolu s bratry stal dědicem království Burgundů. A les dues filles Croma i Clotilde se'ls va perdonar la vida i Gundebald les va acollir al seu palau i Clotilde fou més tard l'esposa del rei Clodoveu I i canonitzada com a Santa Clotilde. Als dos fills també se'ls va tallar el cap i els seus cossos foren tirats al mateix pou que la mare. No és clar si l'oncle Khilperic I va morir en la lluita o fou executat, o bé se'l va permetre restar com a rei fins a morir poc després (en tot cas abans del 480).

In der älteren Literatur wird zu Chilperich II. oft vermerkt, er sei 493 bei innerburgundischen Machtkämpfen umgekommen; das spätere Todesdatum ist durch die neuere Forschung jedoch als überholt anzusehen. Eine von Chilperichs Töchtern namens Crona ging ins Kloster, die andere, Chrodechild, heiratete später den Frankenkönig Chlodwig I., nachdem Chlodwig und Godegisel sich im Kampf gegen Gundobad verbündet hatten.

Sometime in the early 470s Chilperic was forced to submit to the authority of the Roman Empire by the magister militum Ecdicius Avitus. In 475 he probably sheltered an exiled Ecdicius after the Visigoths had obtained possession of the Auvergne. After his brother Gundobad had removed his other brother Godomar (Gundomar) in 486, he turned on Chilperic. In 493 Gundobad assassinated Chilperic and drowned his wife, then exiled their two daughters, , who became a nun, and Clotilde, who fled to her uncle, Godegisel. When the Frankish king, Clovis I, requested the latter's hand in marriage, Gundobad was unable to decline. Clovis and Godegisel allied against Gundobad in a long, drawn-out civil war.
