Er entstand aus dem ursprünglichen International Artist-Award, der sowohl an männliche als auch weibliche Künstler sowie Musikgruppen verliehen wurde. Die Trennung der Geschlechter wurde für die BRIT Awards 2022 wieder aufgehoben, um auch nicht-binäre Künstler auszeichnen zu können.
