When the French adopted "boulingrin" in the 17th century, it was understood to mean a sunk geometrically shaped piece of perfect grass, framed in gravel walks, which often formed the centre of a regularly planted wood called a bosquet, somewhat like a highly formalized glade; it might have a central pool or fountain. The diarist Samuel Pepys relates a conversation he had with the architect Hugh May: Then walked to Whitehall, where saw nobody almost, but walked up and down with Hugh May, who is a very ingenious man. Among other things, discoursing of the present fashion of gardens to make them plain, that we have the best walks of gravell in the world, France having none, nor Italy; and our green of our bowling allies is better than any they have.

Dieses Spiel war in England schon im frühen 16. Jahrhundert beliebt. Im 18. Jahrhundert wurde das Spiel als Boule in Frankreich Mode. Daher ist ein Bowling Green (die im Barock verwendete französische Bezeichnung ist: Boulingrin) nicht selten als Gestaltungselement in Barockgärten integriert. Dessen Fläche ist eben und kann entweder völlig aus Rasen bestehen, oder mit Mustern bzw. Broderien umrahmt sein. Der Rasen wurde ursprünglich durch Schafbeweidung, heutzutage durch häufiges Mähen kurz und dicht gehalten. Laut Meyers Konversationslexikon ist ein Bowling Green eigentlich ein ebener Rasenplatz zu einer Art Kegel- oder Ballspiel (bowling); im Allgemeinen aber jeder sorgsam gepflegte Rasenplatz, auch der öffentliche Spielplatz für Kinder bei den Dörfern etc. Das älteste noch bestehende Bowling Green soll das Old Bowling Green in Southampton sein, das erstmals im Jahr 1299 benutzt wurde.
