Έτσι η ομοσπονδία είναι ο μεγαλύτερος αθλητικός οργανισμός της χώρας. Το ποδόσφαιρο είναι, με μόνη ίσως εξαίρεση το σκι, το πιο δημοφιλές άθλημα στην Αυστρία. Eng.), the director of executive committee of the Austrian lottery, has been the president of the Austrian Football Association. Supporting him is its president, Kurt Ehrenberger, Frank Stronach, Dr. Gerhard Kapl, and Dr. Leo Windtner. In 2004, it was announced there are 285,000 players (both sexes) in Austria playing for 2,309 teams in the federation, although many more players play informally or for non-recognised teams. Thus the federation is the largest sporting organisation the country. Football is, perhaps with the exception of skiing, the most popular sport in Austria. Football possesses a large value, and has a rich history and tradition in Austria.

Der Fußball ist vor dem Skisport die beliebteste Sportart in Österreich, allerdings erst nach dem Bergsport. Fußball besitzt einen großen Stellenwert und hat in Österreich eine Tradition, die sich bis ins Jahr 1894 zurückverfolgen lässt. Jedes Jahr wird der österreichische Meister in der ÖFB Frauen-Bundesliga und in der Bundesliga ermittelt und der ÖFB-Ladies-Cup und der ÖFB-Cup werden ausgespielt. Weiters bestreiten die österreichische Fußballnationalmannschaft und die Österreichische Fußballnationalmannschaft der Frauen jährlich mehrere Länderspiele und nehmen an internationalen Bewerben teil. Im April 2018 kündigte der Verband an, zusätzlich ein Futsal-Nationalteam zu etablieren.
