Am 8. März 2003 fand ein Referendum in Malta über den Beitritt des Landes zur Europäischen Union statt. Es wurde mit einer knappen Mehrheit von 53,6 % angenommen.

A referendum on European Union membership was held in Malta on 8 March 2003. The result was 54% in favour. The subsequent April 2003 general elections were won by the Nationalist Party, which was in favour of EU membership, the opposition Labour Party having opposed joining. Malta joined the EU on 1 May 2004. The referendum saw the highest turnout in an EU membership referendum (91%) and the lowest support for joining of any of the nine countries that held referendums on joining the EU in 2003.

Zgodnie z maltańskim prawem wynik referendum nie był wiążący dla władz kraju, ale mimo to miał duże znaczenie polityczne. Aby ułatwić organizację głosowania, referendum odbyło się równocześnie z wyborami samorządowymi. Spośród wszystkich referendów przedakcesyjnych poprzedzających rozszerzenie UE w 2004 roku głosowanie na Malcie odznaczało się najwyższą frekwencją, a zarazem najmniejszym odsetkiem głosów oddanych za przystąpieniem do UE.

На наступних загальних виборах у квітні 2003 р . перемогла Націоналістична партія, яка виступала за членство в ЄС, а опозиційна Лейбористська партія виступала проти приєднання. Мальта приєдналася до ЄС 1 травня 2004 року. На референдумі була найвища явка на референдумі про членство в ЄС (91%) і найнижча підтримка вступу з усіх дев’яти країн, які проводили референдуми про вступ до ЄС у 2003 році.

Le taux de participation est de 90,9 % avec 270 633 votants pour un corps électoral de 297 881 personnes. 53,65 % des votants ont répondu favorablement à la question posée soit 143 094 personnes. 46,35 % des votants ont voté contre cette adhésion, soit 123 628 personnes.
