His specific year of birth is unknown. Wu was born in Nanjing in the Jiangsu province, and later lived in Shanghai and Japan. His style name was 'Shixian' and his sobriquet was 'splash-ink monk'. Wu specialized in painting foggy and rainy landscapes.
