Frank Baums ist Wicked ein revisionistischer Blick auf das Land und die Charaktere von Oz, wie sie aus Baums Roman Der Zauberer von Oz (1900) und dem Film Der Zauberer von Oz (1939) bekannt sind. Wicked, erschienen mit Illustrationen von , stellt Vorkommnisse, Charaktere und Situationen aus Baums Roman und dem Film auf neue und überraschende Weise dar. Im Gegensatz zum beliebten Film und den Werken Baums ist dieser Roman nicht an Kinder gerichtet. Er umfasst teilweise sehr direkte Sprache und Inhalte. Das erfolgreiche Broadway-Musical Wicked – Die Hexen von Oz basiert auf Maguires Roman, unterscheidet sich aber sehr in Wortwahl und Handlung. Eine Fortsetzung von Wicked mit dem Titel wurde im Herbst 2005 veröffentlicht. Der dritte Band des Wicked-Zyklus mit dem Titel kam am 14. Oktober 2008 auf den Markt.
