What Is This (conocida antes de 1980 como Anthym) fue una banda de rock estadounidense que se originó en 1979 en la escuela secundaria Fairfax High School de Los Ángeles y que realizó numerosos espectáculos a lo largo de la costa de California.

Le groupe s'est formé avant mais jouait à la même époque que les Red Hot Chili Peppers. Hillel Slovak et Jack Irons ont d'ailleurs quitté les Red Hot peu de temps avant la sortie de leur premier album pour pouvoir rester dans le groupe What Is This?. Hillel Slovak rejoindra les Red Hot pour le deuxième album et Jack Irons pour le troisième. Le nom du groupe fait référence à la réaction qu'avait la plupart des gens en écoutant leur musique.

Formed by guitarist Hillel Slovak, drummer Jack Irons, vocalist Alain Johannes, and bassist Todd Strassman, the band served as the nucleus for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Members of the band would go on to perform with Eleven, Chris Cornell, Pearl Jam, Mark Lanegan, Them Crooked Vultures, Alain Johannes Trio and Queens of the Stone Age.

Os três últimos integrantes citados, na época também faziam parte da banda paralela chamada Red Hot Chili Peppers que contava com Anthony Kiedis nos vocais. Flea não chegou a gravar com o What Is This? porque estava gravando com os Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Anthym speelde vooral in clubs in Hollywood. Anthony Kiedis, de latere zanger van de Red Hot Chili Peppers, verzorgde met gedichtjes en komische stukjes de aankondiging. What Is This kreeg in 1983 een platencontract en bracht de platen Squeezed, 3 Out Of 5 Live en What Is This? uit tussen 1984 en 1985.
