In 2021, the municipality wanted to rename the village to West Frisian: Waaksens, however the plan was abandoned due to fierce resistance, because another village is named Waaksens which already causes significant problems, and changing the x to ks does not make it Frisian. Another argument was that it has been spelt with an x since the 13th century. A referendum which was called by the municipality, resulted in 100% disapproval.
