Todd Coolman (born July 14, 1954) is a jazz bassist and a retired tenured Professor of Music at the Jazz Studies Program in the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College in Westchester County, New York. He is also the former Artistic Director of the Skidmore Jazz Institute. He has written two method books related to jazz bass playing: The Bass Tradition and The Bottom Line. Von 1986 bis 1989 gehörte er dem wiedergegründeten Jazztet von Benny Golson und Art Farmer an. 1988/89 spielte er in Terry Gibbs/Buddy DeFrancos Band, im Trio des Pianisten John Campbell und mit David Fathead Newman. Anfang der 1990er Jahre spielte er im Trio von Hal Galper (Invitation to a Concert), mit Barney Kessel und Rob Schneiderman. In dieser Zeit nahm Coolman sein erstes Soloalbum Lexicon auf. 1999 wurde er mit dem Grammy Award in der Kategorie Best Album Notes für die Liner Notes der Edition Miles Davis Quintet 1965-1968 ausgezeichnet. Zu hören ist er u.a, auch Noah Haidus Doctone (2019). Todd Coolman ist als Professor für Musik und Direktor des Jazz Studien-Programms am Musikkonservatorium des Purchase College tätig. An der New York University wurde Coolman 1997 über Miles Davis promoviert (The Miles Davis Quintet of the Mid-1960s: Synthesis of improvisational and compositional elements). Er lebt in New Jersey.

In 1999, Coolman won the Grammy Award for Best Album Notes for Miles Davis Quintet 1965-1968. In 2011 an album on which he played, James Moody's Moody 4B, won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual or Group.
