His conventional name (his real name being unknown today, as none of his works are signed) is derived from his artificial affected style of figural painting, on the basis of which about 135 vases can be ascribed to him. He was active as both potter and painter. His speciality was amphorae. He mainly painted ovoid amphorae and belly amphorae, of the then newly introduced type C. Most of the 132 vases associated with him were found in Etruscan tombs and as such are usually well preserved.

Seinen Notnamen erhielt er nach seinem gezierten, 'affektierten' Figurenstil, auf Grund dessen ihm bis heute etwa 135 Gefäße zugeschrieben werden können. Der Affecter war gleichzeitig Töpfer und Maler. Seine Spezialität waren Amphoren. Er bemalte vor allem eiförmige Amphoren und Bauchamphoren des zu dieser Zeit neuen Typs C. Besonders interessiert war er an der dekorativen Wirkung seiner Bilder aus formelhaften Figuren in langen Mänteln oder mit gespreizten Gesten, der erzählende Inhalt blieb zweitrangig. In dieser Tendenz zum Formalismus und in vielen Details ist der Affecter ein Nachfolger des Amasis-Malers, dessen künstlerische Qualität ihm jedoch fehlt. Zusammen mit dem Elbows-Out-Maler wird er zu den schwarzfigurigen Manieristen gezählt. Seine Bilder wirken ein wenig wie aus einer irrealen Welt. Die Figuren des Affecters haben gewöhnlich kleine Köpfe und gut gepolsterte Körper, wenn er sie bekleidet darstellt, sind jedoch recht eckig und spitz, wenn er sie nackt malte. Seine Ornamente zeichnet er sehr sorgfältig. Zudem verziert er seine Gewänder gern mit farbigen Punkten. Seine Pflanzenornamente sind offenbar eng mit denen ostgriechischer Werkstätten wie denen der und der Northampton-Gruppe verbunden und sprechen für einen regen Kulturaustausch in dieser Zeit zwischen Attika und dem ionischen Griechenland. Das Besondere an seinen späten Amphoren ist der Ersatz der Figuren auf den Amphorenhälsen durch Pflanzenornamente.

El dibujo de flores está próximo al de algunos talleres de figuras negras de Grecia oriental (Grupo clazomenio, Grupo de Northampton), lo que indica un intercambio cultural regular entre Ática y Jonia. Una característica especial de sus ánforas es la sustitución de la decoración figurativa habitual en el cuello por ornamentos florales. Le interesaba especialmente el efecto decorativo de sus imágenes, compuestas por figuras estilizadas con largas capas o con gestos afectados; el contenido narrativo era secundario. En su tendencia a las figuras originales y a los múltiples detalles, Affecter es un sucesor del Pintor de Amasis, del cual puede haber aprendido su oficio. Junto con el pintor Elbows Out, es considerado un manierista del estilo de las figuras negras. Sus escenas con ancianos de pie están en actitudes mecánicas gesticulando en el vacío junto a hombres acostados con jóvenes. Sus últimas ánforas lucen motivos florales, sin figuras en el cuello, sustituidas por ornamentos vegetales. Una de ellas la pintó para un artista de los años 520 a. C., lo que podría contribuir a datar su estilo imperceptible. Tal vez fue alfarero y pintor. La mayoría de los 132 vasos que se le atribuyen fueron encontrados en tumbas etruscas y como tales suelen estar bien conservados.

He was interested particularly in the decorative effect of his images, composed of stylised figures in long cloaks or with affected gestures; narrative content was secondary. In his tendency to formulaic figures and multiple details, the Affecter is a successor to the Amasis Painter, from whom he may have learnt his trade. Together with the painter Elbows Out, he is considered to be a mannerist of the black-figure style. His images often seem to reflect a surreal world. His figures usually have small heads and seemingly upholstered bodies, when clothed, or angular pointed ones, when naked. His ornaments are very carefully drawn. He often decorated garments with coloured dots. His ornaments seem closely related to those of workshops, such as the or the Northampton Group, indicating regular cultural exchange between Attica and Ionia. A special feature of his amphorae is the replacement of the usual figural decoration on the neck by vegetal ornaments.
