The character cast consists of Dr. Ramzi, a scholar and social activist, the 99 youngsters (some of them children), with special abilities conferred to them by "Noor" gemstones. The set of evil characters is led by the power-hungry Rughal, who seeks to steal the power of the Noor stones and their bearers for his personal benefit. The storyline pits the 99 led by Dr. Ramzi in their pursuit of social justice and peace against the forces of chaos and evil.

La rivista Forbes ha definito questa collana di fumetti "una delle tendenze che colonizzerà il mondo", vista la grande diffusione che ha avuto tra i giovani. Il fumetto ha entusiasmato anche il Presidente degli Stati Uniti d'America Barack Obama che, in un suo discorso, l'ha definito "un esempio di tolleranza ed innovazione". Questo perché ha come protagonisti eroi ed eroine che provengono da molte parti del mondo, che vogliono rappresentare l'eliminazione delle differenze e dei pregiudizi dovuti alle diverse idee, pelli, religioni e culture. Ha ricevuto anche critiche per la distribuzione in Occidente. Molti infatti, restando ancora attaccati ai fatti accaduti l'11 settembre 2001 non accettano che la cultura araba e la religione musulmana possa avvicinarsi al mondo occidentale. Il disegnatore Al-Mutawa ha dichiarato che il fumetto non ha contenuti politici o religiosi. Non ci sono mai, infatti, rimandi espliciti alla religione islamica. Il creatore ha affermato "Non cerco di convertire nessuno". Il suo è solo un voler dare alle nuove generazioni di musulmani dei modelli migliori. [8] La Endemol, società di produzioni televisive, ha in progetto di creare sulla storia dei 99 una serie di cartoni animati da trasmettere in arabo ed inglese. In effetti The 99 arriverà presto nel Regno Unito, dove la Endemol ha prodotto una serie di cartoni animati ispirati al fumetto, anche online su Yahoo. Questa serie di cartoni animati è stata molto apprezzata da Barack Obama, mentre invece non è stata gradita dagli arabi, e in particolare dal Consiglio per la Ricerca e la Fatwa. Non accettano infatti che i 99 nomi sacri di Allah vengano rappresentati in tv.. Il fumetto islamico "The 99" è stato anche protagonista dell'evento ufficiale del ComicsDay a Napoli, "il Fumettour". Ha proposto infatti la mostra “The World fo the 99″. È nato anche un sito dedicato a questa squadra di supereroi.

Os personagens são compostos pelo Dr. Ramzi, um estudioso e activista social e 99 jovens (alguns deles crianças), com habilidades especiais conferidas pelas pedras preciosas "Noor", e um conjunto de vilões liderados por Rughal que pretende roubar o poder das pedras Noor. O enredo coloca os 99 liderados pelo Dr. Ramzi na busca da justiça social e da paz contra as forças do caos e do mal, superando sempre novos desafios. A série já ganhou reputação internacional, tendo sido inclusive elogiada pelo presidente dos Estados Unidos da América, Barack Obama, afirmando que a série tinha "capturado a imaginação de muitos jovens", chegando também a aparecer em várias edições especais da DC Comics, com o Super-homem, Batman e a Mulher-Maravilha.
