In 2018, the competition underwent another change in format, this time dropping two teams (the Cheetahs and Kings) from the South African conference, and one (Western Force) from the Australian conference. This left the competition with 15 teams. The Sunwolves left the competition for financial reasons before the conclusion of the 2020 season. The 2020 Super Rugby season was subsequently cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and this led to a mass-scale restructuring of the competition. Due to international travel restrictions relating to the pandemic, the competition was unable to resume in its multinational format, prompting Rugby Australia and New Zealand Rugby to launch domestic tournaments, Super Rugby AU and Super Rugby Aotearoa respectively. Both these tournaments will continue in 2021, to be followed by Super Rugby Trans-Tasman, a crossover tournament. In September 2020, the South African Rugby Union announced the withdrawal of their four Super Rugby franchises from the competition, with plans for them to join an expanded PRO14 (which would become the United Rugby Championship). The Argentinian Jaguares are not set to compete in any Super Rugby tournaments in 2021, and their future is in doubt, and it is highly likely that they will be disbanded. Sinds het seizoen 2011 is de Super 14 uitgebreid naar 15 teams. De competitie omvat teams uit Australië, Nieuw-Zeeland, Japan, Argentinië en Zuid-Afrika. De overkoepelende organisatie van deze competitie is de SANZAAR.

Jest to największa i uznawana za najlepszą ligę południowej półkuli. W przeszłości liga była mniej liczna, zgodnie z czym nosiła nazwę Super 12 (do 2006), a później Super 14 (do 2010). Osiemnaście zespołów (sześć z Południowej Afryki, po pięć z Australii i Nowej Zelandii oraz po jednym z Japonii i Argentyny) jest podzielonych na dwie grupy (Australazjatycką i Południowoafrykańską), spośród których każda składa się z dwóch konferencji. Drużyny rozgrywają sześć spotkań wewnątrz własnej konferencji oraz dziewięć z zespołami spoza niej. W tej fazie rozgrywek dostaje się cztery punkty za zwycięstwo i dwa punkty za remis. Przyznawane są również punkty bonusowe: za zdobycie czterech lub więcej przyłożeń w meczu, oraz za porażkę najwyżej siedmioma punktami. Oznacza to, że dwa punkty bonusowe w jednym meczu może zdobyć jedynie drużyna pokonana. Do fazy play-off awansują zwycięzcy konferencji, a także cztery kolejne zespoły z największą liczbą punktów w całej lidze. W ćwierćfinale zestawia się zespoły według miejsca w łącznej tabeli – pierwszy rywalizuje z ósmym, drugi z siódmym itd. W fazie pucharowej nie rozgrywa się rewanżów. Mecz odbywa się na obiekcie zespołu, który w fazie ligowej zajął wyższą pozycję.

Турнир, во многом продолживший традиции предшественников, в том числе , стартовал в 1996 г. при участии клубов из Австралии, Новой Зеландии и ЮАР. Официальное название состязания до конца 2005 г. — Супер 12, впоследствии изменённое на Супер 14. Наконец, к сезону 2011 г. было утверждено нынешнее наименование, уже не отражающее число команд-участниц. В сезоне 2016 года к турниру присоединилось по команде из Аргентины и Японии. С 2020 года команды Японии, Аргентины и ЮАР покинули Супер Регби из-за экономических проблем и ограничений, связанных с пандемией.

Det är det största mästerskapet i rugby för klubblag på det södra halvklotet och spelades första gången 1996. Tävlingen kallades från början Super 10, efter antalet deltagande lag. Efterhand utökades antalet lag under namnen Super 12 och Super 14. Det nuvarande namnet fick tävlingen inför 2011 års säsong, då ett 15:e lag tillkom. Sedan 2016 har Argentina och även Japan med varsitt lag som är med och tävlar i turneringen. Före 2011 mötte de deltagande lagen först varandra i en rak serie, där de fyra bäst placerade lagen gick vidare till semifinal. Inför 2011 infördes ett gruppsystem där varje land utgör en grupp. Varje lag möter lagen i samma grupp hemma och borta. Dessutom möter de fyra av de fem lagen i de andra grupperna en gång. Sex lag går vidare till en finalserie.

В рамках чемпіонату змагаються регбійні клуби (франшизи) з Австралії, Нової Зеландії, Південної Африки, Аргентини та Японії. Змагання в рамках Супер Регбі стартували 1996 року. Організацією, що проводить змагання є SANZAR - конфедерація регбійних союзів країн-учасників. Попередня назва змагань була Super-14 - від числа клубів-учасників першості. А починалося все з 10 клубів (як Super-10), пізніше клубів стало 12 (Super-12).
