Sunsets on Empire is a studio album by Fish, the fourth with original material since he left Marillion in 1988. It was mostly written together with Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree, who co-composed six out of ten tracks on the original version, (plus one bonus track on the Japanese and remastered edition) and also produced the album. Tim Bowness, Wilson's partner in No-Man, has additional writing credits on one track. Two permanent members of Fish's line-up, keyboardist , and guitarist co-wrote one and two tracks, respectively.

Om uit de kosten te komen verschenen regelmatig livealbums en verzamelalbums op zijn eigen label . Voorafgaand aan dit album kwam Yin/Yang uit, na dit album Kettle of Fish. Sunsets was het eerste “normale” album van de Schot sinds vier jaar. Het album is opgenomen in de Millennium Recording Studio in Haddington.

Unfortunately, the album and tour were flops and lost Fish hundreds of thousands of pounds, which meant he had to fold his Dick Brothers label. Roadrunner and Chocolate Frog/Snapper would subsequently reissue the album.

Fish schakelde het (toen) opkomend talent Steven Wilson in, die toen furore maakte met Porcupine Tree en no-man en bekend werd vanwege zijn heldere manier van produceren. Het had mede tot resultaat dat de muziek ook een stuk steviger klonk dan op voorgaande albums. Het resultaat was in de ogen van de fans niet erg best; het album verkocht maar matig. In Engeland haalde het slechts een week notering op plaats 42. In Nederland dat toch altijd verzot was op Fish en Marillion, haalde het in 5 weken de 44e plaats. Het album en de daarop volgende tour brachten Fish aan de financiële afgrond. Hij zou gedwongen worden zijn eigen platenlabel op te heffen en heruitgaven verschenen voortaan bij Roadrunner en Snapper Music.
