He represented the Republic of Ireland at under-21 level and won Football Conference championship medals at both Rushden and Chester. Carey signed for King's Lynn in December 2005, making his debut as a substitute in the 3–1 win over local rivals Grantham Town. He was retained in central midfield for the 2006/7 season, however he suffered a horrific double fracture of his leg in the home match against Corby Town in September 2006. By the end of October 2006, with The Linnets top of the Southern Premier League and into the First Round Proper of the F.A. Cup for the first time in nine years; manager Tommy Taylor left the club to take up a coaching role at Peterborough United. Carey and fellow player Dean West were placed in temporary charge of the club. Under the guidance of Carey and West, King's Lynn recorded a memorable 5–3 victory away at Conference South side Bishop's Stortford in the F.A. Cup 1st Round, setting up a second round tie with League One side Oldham Athletic at The Walks. The pair remained in charge of the club until Keith Webb was appointed full-time manager in December 2006. Carey was awarded a benefit game between King's Lynn and Norwich in October 2006 following the double fracture of his leg. Despite initial fears he would never play again, he recovered to make three appearances for The Linnets towards the end of the 2007/08 season.
