Her second kill was the most significant. The victim was HMS Formidable, torpedoed 30 nautical miles (56 km; 35 mi) south of Lyme Regis, at 50°13′N 03°04′W / 50.217°N 3.067°W. She was hit in the number one boiler room on the port side. Out of a crew of approximately 711 men, 547 died as a result. This was one of the largest ships sunk by U-boats during the war. In 1915, U-24 claimed another noted victim, the passenger steamer Arabic, causing 44 deaths, including three Americans. Arabic sank in 10 minutes. This escalated the U-boat fear in the U.S. and caused a diplomatic incident which resulted in the suspension of torpedoing non-military ships without notice.

W wyniku ataku statek został uszkodzony, Pierwszym zatopionym statkiem przez U-24 był brytyjski pancernik o wyporności 15 805 GRT. Okręt został storpedowany i zatonął około 30 mil na południe od Lyme Regis na wybżerzach Dover. W wyniku zatonięcia śmierć poniosło około 547 z ponad siedmiuset członków załogi. 4 czerwca 1916 roku kapitanem U-24 został mianowany Walter Remy. Pod jego dowództwem U-24 zatopił dziewięć statków nieprzyjaciela. Ostatnie dwa 18 czerwca 1917 roku. Brytyjskie parowce "V" (6 557 GRT) oraz "English Monarch" (4 947 GRT). W sierpniu 1917 roku U-24 został przydzielony do Flotylli Treningowej i nie brał udziału w walkach. 22 listopada 1918 roku okręt został poddany Royal Navy. W 1922 został rozebrany w Swansea.
