Era figlio di Guglielmo di Canillac e di Jeanne de Deaux, sorella del cardinale Bertrand de Deaux. Era imparentato con papa Clemente VI ed il fratello Pierre († 1361) fu vescovo di Saint-Pons-de-Thomières e poi di Maguelone.

Augustyna i uzyskał doktorat z prawa rzymskiego i kanonicznego. Był opatem klasztoru w Conques i członkiem kapituły katedralnej w ; w 1340 uzyskał od króla Francji Filipa VI potwierdzenie przywilejów kapituły. Wybór jego wuja na papieża Klemensa VI w 1342 roku otworzył mu drogę do najwyższych stanowisk w Kościele. 28 marca 1345 został arcybiskupem Tuluzy, a 17 grudnia 1350 − kardynałem prezbiterem Santa Croce in Gerusalemme. 4 listopada 1361 otrzymał promocję do rangi biskupa diecezji suburbikarnej Palestrina. Both of his uncles, Pons and Guy, were successively abbots of Aniane (Diocese of Maguelonne, 30 km. from Montpellier), as was a nephew of the Cardinal, also called Pons. In 1345 his niece Garine, the daughter of his brother Marquis and of Alixène de Poitiers-Valentinois, married Guillaume Roger, Vicount of Beaufort, the brother of Cardinal Pierre Roger de Beaufort, who became Pope Clement VI.
