Este desejo parece patente neste disco do U2 que muitos consideram o "álbum branco" da banda, sendo uma alusão ao famoso disco The Beatles, dos Beatles, pelo ecletismo sonoro. A primeira faixa é uma das diversas homenagens do disco, aos mesmos Beatles já citados: "Helter Skelter", inicia o disco, que por sua vez fez parte de um belo e pouco celebrado filme em preto e branco, homônimo, da banda. O disco, que mistura gravações ao vivo e de estúdio, além de músicas de terceiros como "The Star- Spangled Banner", de Jimmy Hendrix, registra homenagens a Billie Holliday, em "Angel of Harlem", e parcerias inéditas até então: B.B. King - "When Love Comes to Town", Bob Dylan - "Love Rescue Me".

Rattle and Hum – szósty album studyjny grupy U2, wydany 10 października 1988. Album wyprodukował Jimmy Iovine. Płyta nagrywana była na żywo w Temple w Arizonie, Denver w Kolorado i Nowym Jorku, a także w A&M Studios w Los Angeles, Sun Studios w Memphis, STS Studios, The Point Depot i Danesmoat w Dublinie. Album utrwala ich ciągłe doświadczenia z muzyką amerykańskich korzeni podczas trasy Joshua Tree, dodatkowo zawierające elementy blues rocka, folk rock i muzyki gospel w ich brzmieniu. Chociaż album miał reprezentować zespół oddający hołd legendom rocka, niektórzy krytycy oskarżyli U2 o próbę umieszczenia na tym albumie współpracy z Bobem Dylanem, B.B. Kingiem i chórem gospel New Voices of Freedom z Harlemu. Album odniósł komercyjny sukces, osiągając pierwsze miejsce w kilku krajach i sprzedając się w 14 milionach egzemplarzy. Rattle and Hum räknas som U2:s sjätte studioalbum (även om hälften är livematerial) och det utkom 10 oktober 1988. Det är också namnet på en konsertfilm, "rockumentär", som hade premiär hösten 1988. U2 åkte under 1987 runt och turnerade med sitt succéalbum The Joshua Tree. De ville föreviga det hela på film och från början var det tänkt att vara en lågbudget-dokumentär.Till filmen, som är en blandning av dokumentär och konsertmaterial i både svartvitt och färg, beslutade U2 också sig för att ge ut en skiva på samma tema. Rattle And Hum är i stor del en hyllning till amerikansk musik, som rock, blues och gospel. Även om både filmen och albumet fick ett relativt bra mottagande när de kom ut, svängde opinionen senare. U2 anklagades för att vara självupptagna, pretentiösa och använda sig av vad andra tidigare hade åstadkommit. Dessutom ansågs de placera sig själva bland musikens legender, som till exempel Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones och The Beatles.
