rdf:langString Rishi Sunak's term as the prime minister of the United Kingdom began on 25 October 2022 when he accepted an invitation of King Charles III to form a government, following the resignation of his predecessor Liz Truss amid a government crisis. Sunak took office amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the cost of living crisis, both of which began during his tenure as chancellor under Boris Johnson. After Truss's resignation amid a government crisis, Sunak was elected unopposed to replace her, after being the sole MP to be nominated in the October 2022 Conservative Party leadership election. He was declared leader of the Conservative Party after the results of the October 2022 Conservative Party leadership election were announced on 24 October 2022. Sunak was appointed prime minister by Charles III, the first to be appointed during his reign, the following day. He is the first British Asian and the first Hindu to have held the office of prime minister. Sunak took office amid the cost of living crisis and energy supply crisis, and has promised to place economic stability and confidence at the heart of his government's agenda. He has also authorized foreign aid and weapons shipments to Ukraine in response to the Russian invasion of the country. He was criticised for appointing Gavin Williamson and Dominic Raab to the cabinet after both men were accused of bullying and both denied bullying. Williamson resigned from the cabinet and Raab faces an independent investigation. Sunak was also criticised for returning Suella Braverman to the cabinet, despite an alleged security breach. Sunak said that his appointments to the government were in an attempt to reflect a "unified party".
