The Petaling Jaya City Council (Malay: Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya, abbreviated MBPJ) is the city council which administers the city of Petaling Jaya in the state of Selangor, Malaysia. This council was established after the city was officially granted city status on 20 June 2006. Their jurisdiction covers an area of 97 square kilometres. The council consists of the mayor plus twenty-four councillors appointed to serve a one-year term by the Selangor State Government. MBPJ is responsible for public health and sanitation, waste removal and management, town planning, environmental protection and building control, social and economic development and general maintenance functions of urban infrastructure.MBPJ City Council takes also care of renovation and building approvals, as well as developments. The departments in charge are well known for bribes and corruption. In General kolej an application will be fast tracked and processed only if the unofficial channels are used. A common fee averaging 10.000RM (depending on the officer in charge) will be demanded and paid via the well known runner scheme, so that no personal interaction has to be taken place. If the fee is not paid, honest applications will generally be put on hold or purposely delayed.
