The squadron was again disbanded in 1982, following the retirement of the Canberra. It was re-formed in 2000 to operate the Boeing 737 AEW&C "Wedgetail". One of the six Boeing 737s was deployed to the Middle East in September 2014, as part of Australia's contribution to the military coalition against ISIS.

Durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial, o esquadrão operou na Frente Ocidental realizando operações de combate aéreo e ataque ar-solo. Extinto em 1919, foi novamente formado em 1922, mas apenas durou alguns meses até ser extinto novamente. Mais tarde, em 1937, foi novamente criado e prestou serviço na Segunda Guerra Mundial, no Sudeste do Pacífico.
