TSR fit alors de Mordenkaïnen un puissant mage doté de solides convictions opposées aux absolus moraux, en même temps que le chef du Cercle des Huit, une cabale de huit puissants magiciens. Dans les œuvres de fictions associées au Monde de Faucongris, il a joué à la fois le rôle de protagoniste et d'antagoniste. Les publications officielles du Monde de Faucongris sont parfois en contradiction les unes avec les autres en ce qui concerne Mordenkaïnen.
