The population was 64 at the 2020 census. The plantation comprises its namesake island and the uninhabited neighboring island of Manana. The island is accessible by scheduled boat service from Boothbay Harbor, New Harbor and Port Clyde. Visitors' cars are not allowed on the island. It was designated a National Natural Landmark for its coastal and island flora in 1966.

Wyspa przyciąga w sezonie letnim również pracowników sezonowych. Mimo niewielkich rozmiarów na wyspie znajdują się kościół, muzeum i poczta. Znaczna część wyspy jest niezamieszkana. Przecina ją kilka publicznych szlaków turystycznych. Wyspa jest uznawana za w dużej części niezniszczoną przez cywilizację.

Bastante danificado pelo mar e pelas condições climáticas, em 1852 foi reconstruído no seu formado cônico, tal como pode ser encontrado ainda hoje. Em 1959 foi novamente reformado para receber o sistema da automatização. Esse farol (e as construções que o cercam) foi modelo de uma das mais belas e conhecidas pinturas da artista brasileira Anita Malfatti quando visitou a Ilha Monhegan, juntamente com os colegas, levada pelo seu professor Homer Boss da de Nova Iorque.
