Esta característica le permitió fusionar distintos estilos musicales y ser el músico que sostuvo la base rítmica. Esto, debido a que Toto, combina diferentes géneros, siendo Lukather ―guitarrista― el generador de sonido roquero, mientras que Jeff en la batería se inclinó por el sonido pulcro y swing del jazz. Al tener dos elementos diferenciadores, el bajista tuvo que acoplarse a ellos y fusionar ambas formas de tocar sin que se disociaran. Lo mismo ocurrió con el ingreso de Phillips, tras sustituir a Jeff cuando murió. Con el ingreso de Phillips, Mike tuvo que adaptarse al sonido progresivo de este baterista, sin perder la esencia del groove que instaló junto a su hermano fallecido. Al igual que el resto de sus compañeros de Toto, fue músico de sesión y tocó junto a diversos artistas tales como: Steve Vai, Carlos Santana, Ricky Martin, Julio Iglesias, Lee Ritenour, Donna Summer, Steve Perry, Roberto Carlos, Jefferson Airplane, Joe Walsh y Stevie Nicks, entre otros. Una de sus principales colaboraciones fue junto a Santana, en el disco ganador de nueve premios grammys: Supernatural. Pero su carrera como músico fue interrumpida a partir del año 2007 porque tuvo la enfermedad esclerosis lateral amiotrófica (ELA), hasta fallecer el día 15 de marzo de 2015.

En 2013, la Porcaro Charity Fund est créée par la femme du bassiste, dans le but de collecter des fonds pour lutter contre la maladie. En 2015, alors que Toto prépare la sortie d'un nouvel album, Toto XIV, l'état de santé de Mike Porcaro continue de se dégrader. Il meurt le 15 mars 2015 des suites de la maladie.

* America – . Hij is er dan ook nog niet bij als 3/5 van de eerste samenstelling van Toto (Steve Lukather en Bobby Kimball deden niet mee) met Boz Scaggs opnam. Mike zou wel later een rolletje spelen in de videoclip Jojo van Scaggs voor promotie van het album waarop wederom Toto een groot deel van de begeleiding op zich nam. Mikes naam duikt voor het eerst bij een Toto-album op bij hun succesvolle Toto IV-album. Hij bespeelde de cello op Good for you. De vaste bassist gaf na de opname van dat album aan zich weer meer te willen richten op zijn studiowerk en zijn gezin. Mike Porcaro nam zijn plaats in. Die plaats stond hij niet meer af tot 2007. Toto toerde toen en Mike Porcaro kon door symptomen van amyotrofe laterale sclerose (ALS) niet meer verder spelen. Hij werd vervangen door Leland Sklar (o.a. Phil Collins). Na de toer viel Toto tijdelijk uiteen. In 2010 en 2011 kwam de band weer bij elkaar om geld bijeen te brengen voor een verdere behandeling/ondersteuning van Mike Porcaro. Sklar werd toen ingeruild voor Nathan East. Vanaf dan volgen alleen nog berichten dat de situatie rondom Mike Porcaro langzaam verslechterde. In maart 2015 kwam het bericht dat Mike Porcaro in Los Angeles was overleden. Het enige muziekalbum dat zijn naam draagt kreeg als titel mee Brotherly love en verscheen in 2011. Ook op dat album is een aantal Totoleden te horen. Hij overleed op 59-jarige leeftijd en werd begraven op de Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills, waar zijn broer Jeff ook ligt.
