Cash Box described the song as being "a similar chugging ballad effort" to "What's Going On," stating that "the easy going surface lies gently above an exciting rhythm track." In 1991, a music video of the song was released by Motown Records, featuring appearances by celebrities such as Big Daddy Kane, Bobby Brown, Diana Ross, David Bowie and Wesley Snipes. As the single became his second million-seller from What's Going On, the album started on the soul album charts in the top five and began charging up the pop rankings. "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" soon became one of Gaye's most famous songs in his extensive catalogue. In 2002 it was his third single recording to win a "Grammy Hall of Fame" Award. As on "Inner City Blues", Bob Babbitt, not James Jamerson, plays the bass line.

(Qu’en est-il de cette terre surpeuplée, combien d’agressions de l’homme peut-elle encore supporter ?)». Au XXIe siècle, alors que le réchauffement climatique et ses conséquences préoccupent le monde entier, ces paroles ont une résonance particulière. Ce poignant hymne écologique écrit et composé par le seul Marvin Gaye est enregistré aux studios « Hitsville » quartiers généraux de Motown à Détroit Michigan, en mars 1971. Il chante et s’accompagne au piano, puis ajoute des pistes de Mellotron. La section de cordes est conduite par David Van De Pitte, la rythmique interprétée par les Funk Brothers, et le solo de saxophone ténor par Wild Bill Moore. Sur le 33 tours original, Mercy Mercy Me clôture la face A de l'album et rappelle le thème musical de la chanson-titre dans son final. La chanson a remporté un « Grammy Hall Of Fame » en 2002.
