Freire (also known as Freyre) was born in Carmona, Spain near Seville, to a Spanish cavalry officer from Galicia, Francisco Freire de Andrade, and his wife Josefa Armijo y Bravo, also from Carmona. He joined his father's Alcántara cavalry regiment as a minor cadet when just seven years old, and on 1 January 1780 became an ordinary cadet. He participated in his first battle on 15 May 1793, against revolutionary French forces during the opening of the Battle of Mas Deu, part of the War of the Pyrenees. Freire spent the next two years in Rousillon and Catalonia, including that war's last actions during which Spanish

Manuel Alberto Freyre de Andrade y Armijo (Carmona, Sevillako probintzia, 1765eko azaroaren 4a - Madril, 1834ko martxoaren 7a) espainiar militarra izan zen. Konbentzioko eta Napoleonen aurkako gerretan aritu zen. Iberiar Penintsulako Gerraren (1808-1814) barruan, 1813ko abuztuak 9an, hala erabakita, une horretan Gipuzkoan zegoen Laugarren Armada Espainiarreko buru berri bilakatu zen Castaños jeneralaren ordez. Kargu hori zuelarik, San Martzialgo gudua irabazi zuen Soult mariskal frantsesaren osteen aurrean (Irun, 1813ko abuztuak 31an). San Martzialgo markes-titulua eman zioten garaipen harengatik. Fernando VII.ak Gerra ministro izendatu zuen 1814ean, baina ez zuen azkenean kargu hura hartu, liberala zelako. 1820. urtean, Freyre jeneralaren agindupean jardun zuten Cadizko mugimendu liberala (Riegoren matxinada, 1820ko martxoa) tiroz zapaldu zuten osteek. Tras luchar contra los franceses en Murcia, Granada, y Valencia (1810-1812), sucedió al general Castaños al frente del , el Ejército de Galicia. Obtuvo el triunfo en la batalla de San Marcial sobre las tropas de Soult en 1813 (ganando la Cruz de San Fernando y el título nobiliario de marqués de San Marcial). Fue también prócer del Reino desde 1834 hasta su fallecimiento en 1835.

He participated in his first battle on 15 May 1793, against revolutionary French forces during the opening of the Battle of Mas Deu, part of the War of the Pyrenees. Freire spent the next two years in Rousillon and Catalonia, including that war's last actions during which Spanish forces recaptured Puigcerda and Bellver (after the peace treaty had been signed). Freire received several promotions during that war, having been named a junior lieutenant on 10 October 1793, full lieutenant on 20 November, ayundante on 13 December 1793, captain on 18 February 1794, and cavalry captain on 28 July 1795. During the following peace, Freire was promoted to sergeant major, then command of a squadron on 4 April 1801. He later participated in a campaign against Portugal in Arronches, before being assigned to training in Mallorca.
