A major portion of the film was shot in the Balkan region in countries like Croatia, Serbia, Albania and Macedonia, as well as Latvia and other parts of Europe, with rest of the scenes in India. Maattrraan was the first Indian film to use performance capture technology. Based on the Siamese twins concept, It was also touted to be the first Indian film based on conjoined twins, until two other films, with the same concept were launched later. The film was released on 12 October 2012. The film received mostly positive reviews for critics.
