The position went instead to Maynard Jackson who in turn became Atlanta's first African American mayor. In 2017, the State Bar of Georgia awarded its highest recognition, The Lifetime Achievement Award, to Johnson during a special ceremony held in February. Johnson died on October 24, 2019 at the age of 91.
